"...results are certainly greater than skin deep at Gravity Janes. I had the best results from my blood work since my heart attack in November 2004. I have struggled with my HDL, and though (my current number) is not within my goal range it is the highest it has ever been and I am sure it will be shortly. Thanks for the support. Terry and I are both enjoying the program tremendously." George N

Developing New Functional Capacity

Coach's Note

If you never exercise to the point of discomfort, you are not fit. Happy, smiling, chatty people are not exercising, they are degenerating. Degeneration - as in, most of what we call aging - is accelerated when we fail to recognize the value of discomfort in our exercise.

The most accurate gauge we have of the creation of new capacity is when conversation ceases and the most important thing you can think of is how you're going to get your next breath. That level of discomfort is the only state in which new capacity is created. When new capacity is created, we have essentially turned back the clock on our age. Such is the value of discomfort.

Tires Are Out, Must Be Summer

They're kind of hard to miss, but perhaps you somehow failed to notice that our two 250# friends have been coaxed out of their winter nap for some warm weather fun. Get set for some flipping, jumping, and lifting of the rubber kind. This is some of the most fun we have all year so come join in.

Most recently the Issaquah Swim Team was introduced to the round mounds for the first time. You'll find pictures of this adventure on the IST Page.

Happy Memorial Day

Gravity Janes will be operating on a limited schedule Monday, Memorial Day. We will have just one Advanced Group session at 9A. The booking schedule should reflect that now, and it is recommended that you book a spot soon as it will probably fill up. We'll be back for a full schedule on Tuesday.

We have another interview in our performance diet series conducted Saturday, May 23rd, with diet expert Robb Wolf. Robb has a BS in Biochemistry and has worked in lipid metabolism at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He also worked on Paleolithic Diet research with Professor Loren Cordain of Colorado State University. Robb is also a review editor for the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism.

Nicolé Headed For The Show

The CrossFit Northwest Regional Qualifying Round for the 2009 Games was held Saturday, May 16th, at Magnusen Park in Seattle. Approximately 150 athletes, one-third of them women, from Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana, competed in a test of human performance in this all-day event. When all the dust settled, only 4 men and 4 women would move on to compete in the main event in mid-July (women victors shown above).

One of those 4 women is our own Nicolé Verbrugghe (3rd from left). See all the winners and the official results here, and photos of the event here. Congratulations to all of these fine athletes.

This was one amazingly tough competition and these were some very impressive victories. We'll bring you updates on Nicolé's training and progress as the Games get close.

Please note your congratulations to her in the Comments section below.
