The Next GJ Nutrition Challenge

TRY A GJ WORKOUT

"Overall, my payoff is in feeling great and being strong. I have chosen to have an extraordinary commitment to my wellbeing. No amount of working out will compensate for poor eating. For success food and workout must be in line. This is a journey. One where I will continue to learn and refine." Darlene G

Jane Says...

"Without the guidance of an explicit definition, hoping for the outcome of 'fitness' is a little like removing the steering wheel from your car and hoping it will still end up at the grocery store."

Challenge Season

July is turning into a month of competition for GJ athletes: Nicole Meecum is running a half-marathon, the IST is coming upon their major long-course event of the year, Nicolé Verbrugghe's appearance at the CrossFit Games is less than 2 weeks away, Jenna Edlund will be summitting Mt. Ranier this month, and a few others have various mtn biking and triathlon events on the way.

There are new slide shows on the Picture Page with recent images of the ongoing training at Gravity Janes.

Even if you're not among those mentioned above, you can make this your Challenge Month by attacking the personal athletic goals you're working on. I'll look for a new round of crossed-off items on the Goals Board this month.

Real Women Flip Tractor Tires

Think about what you see in the typical health club: the weight room - specifically, the free weight stations - are occupied exclusively by men, while the step-aerobics classes attract mostly women. Ask each group what they are trying to achieve and they would all say "fitness". But the types of work in which each are engaged will produce very different results. What gives? Last time a I checked both groups - male and female - are all human. And fitness is the same regardless of gender.

That explains just one of the Gravity Janes differences. Men, women, old, young, all work side-by-side at exactly the same tasks. Which is not to say the same loads, just the same work.

So, don't be surprised next time you drive by and see groups of women flipping our famous tractor tires in the parking lot. That's what real women do.

Making Gains

This entry is devoted to all of the people working hard on their fitness daily at GJs. I am always amazed at the dedication and effort put into fitness inside these walls. We know how to lead you to the highest level of athletic conditioning possible, but only you can provide the motivation and effort. Impressive gains in human performance are a guaranteed result of hard work here.

And remember, no matter how out of control your life may be, your health and fitness are always in your control. And, once gained, it is something that no one can ever take away from you.

Thank you for your presence in our gym. It is an honor to be a part of your journey.

The Path To Fitness

Always on the hunt for a simple way to explain how to be authentically fit, this phrase came up and sounded like a good one:

"Move heavy things far and fast. Do it again."

Ask anyone who works out at Gravity Janes and they'll say, "Yeah, that's a pretty good description of what we do." Words like "heavy", "far", and "fast" are all relative and mitigated by each other. But just engaging in work that even looks a little like this, and being better at it today than you were yesterday, is a guarantee that you are on the right path.

Got any other phrases of 10 words or less that you think describes the work here? Post them in Comments.

Fitness Goals

Fitness - when properly defined - is a goal unto itself and should always be the primary focus of exercise. But separate and distinct sub-goals usually prove valuable in moving progress in certain areas along a little more quickly.

GJ has initiated the Goals Board and you're invited to note any areas in which you'd like to see quick improvement. See current postings on the latest Picture Page post.

Perfect Push Ups - no contraptions required

Requirements for a perfect push up (see photo): on your toes with a board-straight body from your heels to the top of your head, and make your nose the first and only body part that touches the floor. Presto, I just saved you "2 monthly payments of only $19.95".

The Birthday Bash

Gravity Janes had a birthday over the weekend and we held a little celebration at the gym. You'll find pictures from the event on the Picture Page. Some of you are barely recognizable out of your gym clothes - you clean up pretty nice.

Chillin' GJ style

It takes a helluva fan to cool off GJ heat. Thanks to Bill G for the loan of his 42" ventilation fan during the heatwave.

As group sessions get crowded, we want to know where to put the overflow. We need to know what additional group sessions you'd like to see on the calendar. Use the Comments section of this post to let us know your preference. If there's enough interest in a particular time slot, we'll add a group there. But if you don't tell us, we can't do it. You can request any time that is not currently designated to a group session, even if it is designated to something else.

Let us hear from you.
