"(This) has been quite a year, and I am so grateful to you and all the coaches at GJ. I feel like a different person. 15 months ago I was in serious trouble, but in total denial about it. It’s hard to believe that so much change can take place in a person in 15 months." Kris B

Jane Says...

"We need to wipe the slate clean of our current exercise, and even our very concept of fitness. The failure of current modes of fitness is in the lack of a clear and cohesive goal. When we return to a goal of original performance-based fitness, the exercise most are engaged in now becomes entirely inadequate to the purpose."

Memorial Day Notes

GJs will be closed for Memorial Day. Have a good weekend, and get outside and play.

Picture: GJ's Kirstin Lynch demonstrates a strict bicycle press.

Kirstin and husband Brendan are currently in training for the STP. The Lynches are raising money for a non profit organization that supports research into a disease called neurofibromatosis (NF); a condition from which their 7 year old son suffers.

We want all Janes to donate to their effort. Here is the link to their fund raising page.

We still need a few volunteers to power the Issaquah Railroad handcart on Father's Day for the "Fenders on Front Street" event. All volunteers will be treated to a Paleo-correct lunch prepared by our own Paleo-correct Terry Baldwin and courtesy of the Downtown Issaquah Association. You'll love the workout on the handcart and you'll get to show the visitors what Janes are made of.

Still a good supply of Landjaeger from Bavarian Meats on hand at the gym. Combine with a little fruit and some nuts for a complete snack. You'll be needing more of those while you're on-the-go this summer.

Summer BBQs Coming Soon

GJs is planning a series of monthly summer BBQs (if we ever have a summer) on Friday's after the 5:30P workout. The inaugural event will double as our 2nd anniversary party. Bring your drinks and everything else will be provided. More details coming in Twitter and the upcoming newsletter. Make sure you're on the list for the newsletter - use the button on the left side of the page to subscribe.

Check the Main Jane Blog for a post on the new policy for assistance band use.

Get set for the final max load test on the current Olympic Lift cycle coming next week.

New Video

Many of you remember that the Saturday morning gang took over the famous Issaquah handcart to burn a few laps on the downtown rails recently. Here is a video of that event.

That event was a dry run for Father's Day in downtown Issaquah when this same handcart will be Jane-powered again for the June 20th event. If you would like to volunteer to crew the handcart and ferry passengers for 30 minutes or so, put your name in at the gym.

In case you missed the news on Twitter, our latest shipment of leather hand guards has arrived. Many of you have been waiting a while for these, so be sure to ask for yours next time you're in. Gravity Janes has access to any equipment you want to have at home at better than retail prices so be sure and check with us before you buy elsewhere.

Fool-Proof Grocery Shopping

This time of year offers one of the best opportunities you  have to shop for groceries with little fear of being enticed to buy something that is less than healthy. The Issaquah's Farmer's Market is one of the best in terms of fresh, organic, and local produce and meats. In fact everything that anyone really needs in their diet is available there from now to October. It would be a great experiment - and statement of your intent to eat well - to shop exclusively at the FM as long as it is open.

If you have questions, or are an experienced FM shopper with tips and stories to tell, post them to Comments.

CrossFit Regional Wrap Up

The CrossFit Regional Qualifier Competition this weekend pitted 38 CF affiliate Teams, and 50 individual men and women in challenges of functional capacity for the right to compete in the final Games competition in California this summer. This particular meet included the best CrossFit athletes from 6 states - which obviously includes some pretty tough customers. And here's how it all turned out:

The Gravity Janes Team finished 14th out of the 38, turning in ranks of 13th, 27th, and 7th in the 3 individual events respectively. The only individual competitor from the gym was Kate Suna, who finished 20th out of the field of 50. I couldn't possibly say enough great things about Kate or the Team, and the heart and effort that they brought to the competition. You gotta feel good about even showing up for something like this.

The pic above is of Steph and Nicolé during the 90-second Partner Clean & Jerk event.

Here is a slideshow of all of the pix of Kate and the Team from the weekend.

Here is a video of the girls in this same event as above.

Here is a video of Stuart and Derrek during the men's contribution to the same event.

GJ Goes to CrossFit Games

The Gravity Janes "A-Team" competes in the team event, and Kate Suna competes in the individual event, at the CrossFit Regional qualifying competition this weekend in Puyallup. The Team is Derrek Pratt, Stuart Brown, Kyle Durand, Emily Carothers, Stephanie Shugarts, and Nicolé Verbrugghe. Coaches are Chris Sakas and Greg Shugarts.

The competition spans both weekend days and we will post updates on the Twitter feed that appears on the home page. Please check in often over the weekend, and post well-wishes in the Comments section at the bottom of this post.

GJ Newsletter Sign Up

Gravity Janes has just installed a permanent button on the web site for subscribing to the monthly GJ Newsletter. You'll find it in the upper left-hand corner of the home page.

The GJ newsletter will contain news about the gym and informational articles available nowhere else. They will arrive once per month in your email inbox, plus an occasional time sensitive bulletin important to clients of GJ - such as gym closures or other temporary schedule changes.

A new batch of Landjaeger (made from a new, low-salt recipe) is now available at the gym. These come in 1# packs that contain 10 - 11 sticks. These make great emergency protein sources. Combine with some fruit and nuts for a nicely balanced snack. Pick some up next time you're in.

Better Lifts By The End Of May

We are in the midst of a 5-week Olympic Lifting cycle at Gravity Janes. Between now and the end of May we will be working on your Snatch and Clean & Jerks at least twice per week. Remember to alternate between the 2 moves every time there's an OLift session. We got a maximum load baseline in week 1, and we'll get a another max load in week 5. Between now and then it will be a lot of technique and reps.

I recommend that you post your week 1 max loads in the Comments section below for easy reference in week 5.

We use a pictures of Olympic Lifts regularly here, so in a post about them we thought we'd show you something completely different. This is about as different as they come.

Gravity Janes Meets Lululemon

Gravity Janes will be leading workouts outdoors in Bellevue's downtown park next to Bellevue Square on May 16th and May 23rd beginning at 9:30A. These workouts are sponsored by Lululemon in Bell Square. We'd like everyone to consider getting a Sunday workout with us there. We'll have kettlebells, sandbags, mats and more there. Call if you have questions.

Picture is of the May 1 workout at the gym. GJ's ATeam & BTeam were joined by some great people from Eastside CrossFit for the monthly team competitions. Video coming soon. Slide show available now on the Picture Page.
