"I am glad that there is a gym out there more interested and invested in health instead of vanity. Not everything can be weighed on the scale and I appreciate your investment into showing us that eating in a very healthy way can improve overall well being. I do feel a lot better and i think my performance is reaping the benefits." Lynn H.

Jane Says...

"The common perception is that a desirable weight, or even a healthy body composition, is the end goal of fitness. The fact is that a healthy body composition is only the starting point for authentic fitness."

Training For Competition

The majority of people who train at Gravity Janes are not competitive athletes, but they receive conditioning that is superior to that of most competitors. Brendon and Kirstin L recently rode the Seattle-To-Portland 2-day bicycle event. Here's an excerpt from a post-ride letter we received from Kirstin:

"The first day we did 128 miles ... and ... felt strong enough to have gone on further (thanks to Gravity Janes training), but our other team members ... were tired and a little worse for wear. We found the ride a lot easier this year even though we only did a quarter of the on-bike training that we did last year!"

Your game is always raised when you train intelligently. Even if your game is simply life.

Running clinic "See Jane Run" starts Aug. 7th. Sign up button now on the left side of the page.

Another Paralette Party

The next Gravity Janes BBQ on August 13th will double as another paralette-making party. Some of you relative newcomers might not remember the previous party in 2008, and you might not have heard me talk about how valuable and inexpensive ($25 + tax) it is to have a set of paralettes of your own at home to use whenever you want.

At a GJ paralette-making party, we provide the know-how, materials, and tools, and you provide the man/woman power. You will pay for the materials that it takes to build however many sets of paralettes you want to take home with you on line, we'll do the buying and have the materials waiting for you at the gym.

You can do a search on this site for "paralettes" and find many posts about the value and variety of the work that you can do on paralettes, and having your own set is at least a little extra incentive to spend more time on them.

Ask questions in the Comments post, or call the gym.

Many of you have heard me say recently how damaging sitting for long periods can be. Here's an article that outlines the problem.

Okay, maybe you're not 6 anymore (or yet), but you should be coming as close as you can to the ability to do this.

Kettlebells For Sale

Above are a few of the intrepid Gravity Girls notching it up for the Girls Games Labor Day weekend. The Labor Day competition is also a spectator event, so we hope you will put it on your calendar even if you're not a competitor. And, there's always room for new competitors if you think you can hang with these women.

Gravity Janes is selling a few of our many kettlebells. Let us know at the gym if you're interested.

Anyone aspire to the moves on this video? We can show you how to get there.

Running Clinic Begins In August

Beginning Saturday, August 7, Gravity Janes will introduce a 10-week running clinic that will meet every Saturday at 9A led by Brian Blankenstein. He'll teach you how to run like a pro. More details coming next week.

A bit of fortunate photography gives us a great look at a common Deadlift error. IST team-member Logan was photographed in the left image exhibiting a common butt-down, knees-forward posture that compromises the lift. He was stopped immediately and his form corrected. The corrected form can be seen in the image to the right - now a perfect set point for a Deadlift.

We're concentrating on Deadlifts all summer. Make sure this is not your error. Ask a GJ coach if you're not sure.

The Changing Face Of Running

We've known for a long time - and many of you have experienced first-hand in our gym - how minimal if any footwear promotes improved mechanics in functional work. It becomes most obvious when you feel how the major lifts all benefit from flat, thin-soled, shoes over typical athletic shoes. But what about running? The last bastion of athletic footwear is falling fast as people realize natural contact with the ground promotes greater efficiencies and constructive patterns of movement in running form.

The only controversy that remains - as you'll read in this recent article that appeared in the Seattle Times - has to do with distance. We have long-promoted the virtues of shorter distances and higher intensities in the realization of the greatest benefit for time spent at that activity. This would seem to quiet whatever controversy remains about the benefits of minimalist running.

All of that athletic show technology - and the attendant cost - are proving to do more harm than good. Please let us know if you have any questions about your running or footwear, but consider a purchase of Vibrams FiveFinger shoes as a great starting point. They'll improve everything you do.
