"I wanted to drop you a little line and thank you and the Gravity Janes team for everything that you do. Before this month I have been secretly staying in shape for the hunting season. Its something I do every year and I was really excited to see how GJ would compare to other workouts I have done in the past. Well I'm sure you could have told me it would be far superior. Well it was...big time. It was such a good feeling to know that there was no ridge line I couldnt hike and no valley I couldnt cross. I guess I just wanted to say thank you for all your hard work and all the things you do for people." Hans

Member-driven Workouts

Wanna program a GJ workout? We'd like to give you that chance. Start thinking about a workout you'd like to see and we'll distribute it to the coaches for a vote. We'll take the best idea each week and include it in the workout on Friday.

Your entry can be some new movement that you've never done at GJ before, a new combination of familiar movements, a previous workout that you want to do again (end-to-end workout or just a segment), or a whole new end-to-end hour.

Don't worry about the structure of it, we just want your ideas.

Submit posts to the Comments section below, or on the Facebook page. Just label your entry, "Member Workout".

CrossFit Games Weekend

The CrossFit Games are being held this weekend in southern California. The events are many of the same things you do at Gravity Janes everyday, but the competitors are the highest performers from around the world. Video of the Games are being streamed live on the Internet at the link below.

August is vacation week for a lot of people, including the staff at GJs. It may become necessary to drop a session here and there over the month. Please check the online schedule before coming to the gym. This is always one of the advantages of pre-registering for the groups you want. Thanks.

Doing Something Fun

What good is fitness - especially when accurately defined - if it doesn't help you enjoy life more. Please use the fitness you've worked so hard for this summer on something fun. Hiking, biking, swimming, climbing, or anything physical that intrigues you. And try something this summer that you've never done before.

Remember too that one of the rewards for measuring your work in the gym is the added confidence that you gain in your own abilities, and how that translates into your desire to engage in new challenges.

I love hearing people tell me how much more enjoyable their summer activities (or winter, for that matter) are now that they've developed new levels of authentic fitness. And, I love getting your pictures of the places you went and the things you did. Many of them end up right here on the GJ web site. Looking forward to more of that this year.

Program Expansions

Basic Training: Consistent capacity crowds for the Basic Training sessions every week has resulted in an expansion of the program to 4 sessions per week beginning this week (7/17). The new schedule is Tuesdays at 6:30P, Wednesdays @ 6:30P, Saturdays @ 10A, and Sundays @ 9A.

All participants in the program are invited to any 2 of the sessions per week. Please be aware that Tuesday and Wednesday sessions are duplicate sessions (same programming for both), and likewise for Saturday and Sunday.

Group Program: At least for the remainder of the summer, and possibly beyond, we will add a 7:30A group session on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. The first new session will be Tuesday, 7/19. Thanks for you input on this and if it remains popular into the school year we will continue it.

Simple Ways To Get More From Your Work

Don't ever hesitate to come early or stay late and get some help on the more specialized movements that you encounter here. The most valuable thing we have to offer is education; take advantage of it. Olympic lifts, power lifts, kettlebells, rowing, anything that you want to be better at is worth understanding better as a means to better performance.

Remember when we used to think that body building was fitness? Even when we believe those days are over, some vestiges of the paradigm remain. I have recognized that there are people here that have an imposed resistance to working out on consecutive days. I say "imposed" because there is no logical reason that a human has to avoid intelligently designed workouts on consecutive days. These notions are often holdovers from widely circulated body building protocols designed for muscle size rather than producing usable fitness. You will benefit in new and dramatic ways from back-to-back workouts.

BBQ Series #2

Here's a photo from Saturday's summer BBQ at the gym. It was great to see you all there for some hangin' out time. Our next get-together will be early August. Please come and join us - and bring your friends and family.

More photos from Saturdays event here.

This article is a great read. It has much more to do with society's lack of will to officially document the devastating effects of sugar than it does the effects themselves. Please make sure to read it all.

Big Summer Weekend

The new Saturday Jane Games workout starts at 8A. This is a team challenge so the more the merrier. Bring it and ring it. See you there.

This is the weekend for the latest Gravity Janes summer BBQ. Drop by the gym anytime between 4:30P and 7P and enjoy some great food and the company of your gym friends. GJ provides the meat, you bring your favorite beverage and some paleo-approximate side dish. More good times from Gravity Janes.

Brendan & Kirstin Lynch are taking on the STP this weekend as a charity event for their son's illness (that's Kirstin in the photo). Please consider taking a moment to learn about NF and making a donation to their effort here: http://www.active.com/donate/nfstp2011/BLynch34

These are 2 of the most terrific parents I know and they are so worthy of any donation you can make to help their son. Thank you from Gravity Janes.

Ring Skills

The regular Thursday afternoon sessions this week - both 5:30P and 6:30P - will feature demonstrations and instruction on ring technique from Trey DuVal of Gymnastics East. There will also be general CrossFit work available for you so you may take all or any part of the workout you want for improving your ring skills.

If there are any ring moves that seem out of reach for you, let Trey show you the most effective progressions to get there. Great gymnastics technique and capacity is one of the most satisfying and useful aspects of fitness you can have. Please take a moment to pre-register for Thursday PM sessions.

The CrossFit Running Clinic starts Saturday. There is a beginning runners session at 10A, and an advanced runners session at 11:30A. Please ask at the gym if you are uncertain about which session to attend. Sign up and pre-pay online.
